About the NDSS

Changes as at July 1 2016

Diabetes Queensland will continue to deliver essential information and advice including NDSS support and education services from July 1 2016. We will continue as the trusted advocates of Queenslanders living with all types of diabetes.

Under Federal Government changes to the NDSS, from July 1 2016 NDSS products will no longer be available for purchase via the Diabetes Queensland online shop or Helpline.  From July 1, subsidised NDSS products, such as needles, syringes, blood glucose test strips, urine test strips and insulin pump consumables will remain available, but through community pharmacies that are NDSS Access Points. There will be no changes to the range of NDSS products, or in the co-payment arrangements that apply. For more about these changes: Read More

Registration and services

The National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) started in 1987 and is funded by the Australian Government. Diabetes Australia assists with the administration of the NDSS. Diabetes Queensland provides a range of NDSS services, support and information for Queenslanders living with all types of diabetes.

To register with the NDSS, people must be diagnosed with diabetes, hold or be eligible to hold a Medicare card and live in Australia. Sometimes visitors to Australia may be eligible through a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with their home country.

People who are registered with the NDSS can access a range of subsidised government-approved products (via community pharmacies that are NDSS Access Points from July 1) including:

  • subsidised testing strips for checking blood glucose levels
  • free insulin syringes and pen-needles (if you require insulin)
  • subsidised insulin pump consumables (IPCs)
  • Assistance with information services on managing life with diabetes can be obtained through contacting Diabetes Queensland Helpline.

Eligible persons can be registered only by their doctor or a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE).

The NDSS Registration form can be downloaded from the NDSS website.
