Nineteen families from the Wide Bay district who have a child
living with type 1 diabetes attended their first DiaBuddies Day
The day, hosted by Diabetes Queensland, was held at the
Bundaberg Flip Out Trampoline Centre. The children were supervised
while they jumped, flipped and twisted in a safe environment as
they experienced a Little Ninjas' Program.
Many of the 63 people who attended were dressed as their
favourite superhero. Willow Reid and Theodore McLaughlin won the
"Best-Dressed Superhero" prizes.
The Allgood and McNair families won the fruit and vegetable
hampers donated by Brisbane Markets.
Nery Taylor, Mia Beer and Kieran Connolly won the carbohydrate
The day was organised to enable children aged 0 to 14 years old
living with type 1 diabetes, along with their siblings, parents and
carers, to make new friendships and create community networks while
having a whole lot of fun.
Some of our adult members have told us they enjoy seeing the
kids at such days as many did not have the opportunity to meet
other children with type 1 when they were younger.
"I was diagnosed 36 years ago at 11," said Rachelle Swan,
Diabetes Queensland Consumer and Business Support officer. "When I
was a child, I was the only student who had diabetes in a large
school. I felt so isolated.
"It was hard because I didn't know even one person with
"My saving grace was camps in Townsville once a year, which were
family camps. My brother and sister felt like they had freedom
because I was supported and Mum and Dad could relax."
Diabetes Queensland also hosted a Moreton Bay DiaBuddies Day
recently at Camp Warrawee in Joyner.
