For those of us using insulin pens, the NDSS and Diabetes
Queensland are offering the OzDAFNE Course to NDSS registrants with
type 1 diabetes in Mount Isa and Roma.
We plan to trial this offer for rural and remote locations in
the hope it can be modelled at other centres throughout Australia.
This course was previously only offered in Queensland in Brisbane
OzDAFNE (an acronym for Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) is a
way of self-managing type 1 diabetes for those who manage their
diabetes using insulin pens.
The program provides a comprehensive review of diabetes
management including topics such as: carbohydrate counting, insulin
adjustment, evaluating blood glucose patterns, minimising risk of
hypoglycaemia and managing exercise and sick days. The program is
delivered by OzDAFNE-trained nurses and dietitians.
The dates for the programs are:
Mount Isa: 13-17th May 2019
Roma: 10-14th June 2019
Rocky Sayce (pictured) is an OzDAFNE graduate. Here are Rocky's
thoughts about the OzDAFNE program.
"I have had type 1 diabetes for over 25 years and was managing
my health reasonably well, so I thought. A year ago my doctor
advised that a new educational course dealing with the finer points
of type 1 diabetes management was available for me. After attending
a diabetes consultation with my diabetes team, I was advised I
would benefit from attending the DAFNE course in order to have a
better quality of life. Honestly, I was very apprehensive at first,
but thought I had nothing to lose, so I signed up to attend the 5
"The first few days were so interesting. The staff support given
was outstanding, and I met others with type 1 diabetes. I felt I
was now part of a team, learning new information that would benefit
me enormously instead of doing it alone as I had for many years. At
the end of the week I was so excited to be part of a program that
really cared so much for us. The information given was life
changing, my life has been totally transformed and the benefits are
ongoing. My family and friends have taken an incredible interest in
my journey, and have seen the changes to my life since OzDAFNE. I
am confident, informed and nothing is a challenge anymore. I am
living life to the maximum. Life is so different now."
