Rural community comes together to help people with diabetes

Jandowae Golf Day _June 2019

Diabetes Queensland would like to thank Peter and June Hawton, and the Warra Hotel's Jim Phelan for their recent support.

With the help of friends and family, Peter and June (photographed with Diabetes Queensland's Kathleen Cook and her husband Matt, who volunteered) held their annual Kathy Abbott Memorial Golf Day at the Jandowae Golf Club in June.

This is the second year they have organised the event in support of our organisation.

The golf day is held in memory of Peter and June's daughter, Kathy, who passed away from diabetes' complications at the age of 33.

A perfect Queensland winter's day meant teams had a fantastic game of golf, lots of laughs and the chance to win some great prizes, which were donated by community members and businesses.

Local super-volunteers, Jim Baylis and Helen Morgan, organised a dinner and raffles night at the historic Warra Hotel in support of the golf day. The night proved popular, with the community coming together to raise an incredible $1,050.

Overall the events raised $2,000 for Diabetes Queensland.

"We sincerely thank the Warra Hotel, volunteers, sponsors and the communities of Warra and Jandowae for helping out so generously with our recent fundraising events. The money raised helps Diabetes Queensland keep up their good work throughout Queensland,' said Peter.
