Kids’ camps offer a chance to make special friendships

Townsville Diabetes Camp Group Photo July 2019

Diabetes Queensland's Grants Program provides funding for educational activities and camps for children with diabetes.

Since 2009, our aim has been to support as many camp providers as possible in various locations across the state. The program is funded through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS).

Townsville Diabetes Centre last month ran their annual diabetes camp which 17 children who live with type 1 attended with their families (pictured above).

Many new friendships were made and all had an amazing time.

Across Australia and internationally, diabetes camps are recognised as an effective model to provide valuable peer support to children with diabetes and their families.

More camps are planned around the state with the next one on the Sunshine Coast from September 22 to 27. This camp is a junior camp (children aged 9 to 12) coordinated by Camp Diabetes.

Camp Diabetes will also host a senior camp (children aged 13-18) from November 8 to 10. These camps are hosted at the Queensland Conference and Camping Centre (QCCC) at Mapleton.

Other camps are planned on the Capricorn Coast at the PCYC at Cooee Bay, coordinated by the Central Queensland Diabetes & Bundaberg Diabetes support groups on September 27 to 30.

Camp Coordinators from D Like a Boss will host their annual family camp on Tangalooma Island from October 18 to 20.
