Lionhearted Brisbane Markets raises $ for diabetes

Despite the Queensland fruit and vegetable industry facing damaging threats and loss of income from food terrorists, the Brisbane Produce Market Annual Charity Mango Auction again raised thousands of dollars for Diabetes Queensland's members.

The 2018 Mango King, Domenico Casagrande of Megafresh in Carina and Chandler, took home Queensland's coveted first tray of mangoes and the sought-after title thanks to his generous $13,000 winning bid.

Diabetes Queensland has been a charity beneficiary of Brisbane Markets since 2013, and will share the proceeds from this auction with the MND & Me Foundation.

In his speech at the start of the auction, Diabetes Queensland President Craig Beyers (pictured on the right with Mr Casagrande) thanked the Markets on behalf of Queenslanders with diabetes.

"Your support helps us keep up the fight. It helps us care for people who are affected by diabetes. And it will help us win the war for better health for Queenslanders. On behalf of them, thank you very much."

Mr Casagrande said the auction was the perfect way to give back to the community.

"This is the first year I've attended and placed a bid at the Mango Auction, but really wanted to go in with a plan and give it a good crack," said Mr Casagrande.

"After the amount of support we have seen from the community over the years at Megafresh, we really wanted to give back to the community at today's auction. After all, the community are our customers.

"Mango season is one of our favourite times of the year. Everyone loves mangoes - it's the hype of the shop all through summer," he said.

Brisbane Markets Chairman Tony Joseph said the market hosts the only Mango Auction in the country, and annually brings fruit shop owners across Brisbane together.

"Our Annual Mango Auction is the perfect way to remind us that summer's on the way," Mr Joseph said.

"With the winning bid for this year's symbolic first tray of mangoes and our combined fundraising activities associated with the Mango Auction, we are thrilled to donate over $20,000 to charity in 2018," he said.

Since 2002 the Brisbane Produce Market's Mango Auction has donated nearly $1 million to charity thanks to the generous support of bidders and attendees each year.
