Mabo family generosity continues Bonita’s legacy

The Mabo family's decision to ask people attending Bonita Mabo's State Funeral to donate to Diabetes Queensland in lieu of flowers continued Mrs Mabo's community-minded legacy, according to Diabetes Queensland CEO Sturt Eastwood.

The funeral will be held in Townsville on Thursday.

"Bonita spent her life working for a better future for South Sea Island, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people," Sturt said.

"Diabetes is a major health threat to that future. The people she fought for are almost four times more likely than non-Indigenous Australians to have diabetes or pre-diabetes.

"The thoughts of Diabetes Queensland staff and supporters are with the Mabo family at this sad time.

"Diabetes Queensland is grateful for the family's generosity. We will do our best to honour it."

Bonita Mabo, an activist and reconciliation advocate in her own right, was the wife of land rights champion Eddie "Koiki" Mabo.

She has died in Townsville, surrounded by her family, at the age of 75.
