Dietitian's tips

Our Diabetes Queensland dietitians have lots of good advice when it comes to healthy food shopping.

  1. Buy essentials first and be choosy about the extras
  2. Check your list. Have you got everything on it and has extra stuff snuck in?
  3. Don't assume bulk buys are cheaper. Compare the price per litre or kg
  4. Look for in-season fruit and vegetables. If you don't know what is in season ask or pick up a guide (website for the fruit market is usually best)
  5. Don't discount soft or blemished produce - it can often be cooked
  6. If you cannot see the labels you cannot read them. Either take your glasses or a magnifying glass
  7. Don't tempt fate, make sure you don't go shopping hungry
  8. Shop when it is less crowded so you won't feel rushed
  9. Head to the fresh fruit and vegetable section first to fill up your trolley
  10. If you don't need it - avoid the aisle. This includes chocolate, soft drinks and unnecessary 'special buys'
  11. With kids? Aim for the checkout that is lolly free
  12. Feeling confused and overwhelmed? Leave and have a break
