Back to basics

Australian Guide to Healthy EatingHere's a handy refresher course for those whose nutrition knowledge dates back to the pyramids - the food pyramid that is!

The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating outlines the five food groups and portion sizes that help you achieve a healthy and well balanced diet.

Each food group provides all the necessary vitamins, minerals and nutrients we need to keep us healthy.

In general

  • limit saturated fat and moderate your total fat intake
  • choose foods low in salt
  • cut back on alcohol
  • avoid foods high in kilojoules and added sugar and salt, like sweet biscuits. Only eat these foods occasionally and in small amounts

In summary, a healthy diet is the foundation to diabetes management and a healthier way of life for everyone.
