Eating in the great outdoors

Eating outdoors is a great way to make the best of our lovely Queensland climate. Whether it's a barbeque or picnic, the food seems to taste better when you eat it outdoors. But there can also be some risks, and we're not talking about bees, bindies and bull ants. Food poisioning can be a real risk when eating outdoors.

There are at least 5.4 million cases of food poisoning in Australia each year caused by contaminated food. Often the food that makes us sick looks, smells and even tastes normal.

Common symptoms of food poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain and can be very serious, especially in young children and the elderly.

Michelle Tong, one of Diabetes Queensland's accredited practising dietitians, recommends following the Safe Food Queensland guide for picnic and barbeque food safety tips.
