Supporting literature

Recent evaluation results in Australia have shown patients achieve:

• A significant decrease in systolic blood pressure.

• A significant decrease in 'Diabetes Distress'.

• A trend towards reduction in cholesterol and HbA1c.

• A significant increase in physical activity.

• A significant increase in the perceived impact of diabetes.

WA pilot study

A 2011 study revealed the DESMOND program led to very real benefits for participants, in terms of their attitude towards self-management, their lifestyle choices and their medical results. The study examined responses from DESMOND participants before the program, one month after the program and six months after the program.

When compared to the pre-program responses, the responses one month after the program indicated DESMOND participants were more likely to:

  • View type 2 diabetes as a serious chronic condition they would have for the rest of their lives
  • Recognise there are serious consequences of poorly managed diabetes
  • Reduce their consumption of fatty foods
  • Increase their physical activity levels (average daily activity, average leisure time activity and number of days per week they engaged in physical activity)
  • Show a reduction in their blood pressure.

Responses six months after the program demonstrated a trend toward lower HbA1c and cholesterol

What health professionals are saying about DESMOND

"Working as a DESMOND educator is very empowering. It provides a great framework to let go of information we feel as educators we need to give people and work with the group to explore their needs and support them in developing their own action plan. I love it".

"The feedback from patients I have met post DESMOND has been fantastic with them wanting to explain the changes they have made and their motivation to continue making and maintaining changes".

"The ongoing quality development (QD) process ensures consistency and competency in delivery and I have not had a formal QD process in other programs I have delivered".

"DESMOND is the only style of education I have been involved in which has 'built in' QD assessment".

What people living with diabetes are saying about DESMOND

"This is just what I needed. I have learned so much and feel so positive now".

"The information has de-mystified diabetes for me. Information on monitoring and talking more to professionals. Thank you for the great information".

"This is the best information session I have attended. I would recommend this to anyone who is worried about diabetes management".

"For me it was more enjoyable being involved in a small group, as we shared many ideas and discussed lots of things that I didn't think of. Also was good to be with other people that had just been diagnosed like me".

"Excellent. I wish I had been able to do this 10 years ago. I learnt more today than in the last 10 years of my nursing career".

Where did DESMOND originate?

DESMOND originated from the UK where it has been an integral part of the type 2 diabetes standardised care pathway since 2003.

Funded by the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS), DESMOND offers an additional service to complement the existing suite of programs and resources delivered by Diabetes Queensland. Continuing Diabetes Queensland's commitment of providing quality education for people living with type 2 diabetes, DESMOND has now replaced the previous group program - Diabetes - What now?
